Migrants of the Mediterranean (MotM) is a global Humanitarian Storytelling NGO documenting the individual Journey Stories of the world’s most impoverished and vulnerable people, first in Lampedusa, Italy, and now across Europe and in the US. The organization’s Humanitarian Storytelling methodology is a hybrid of humanitarianism, journalism and contemporary history, creating a platform to dignify and give voice to people who are otherwise unheard in the migrant community.

MotM is seeking a Migration Media Research Fall 2026 Intern to support the organization’s Social Media platform by monitoring migration-related Italian news and discussions on social media platforms and digital media, identify relevant and reliable information, and produce clear, concise news items and summaries for the MotM community. This is a prime position for someone seeking to apply existing knowledge of Italian and/or from their given field of study (Italian, social impact, non-profit management, marketing/communications, policy and more) to a meaningful semester-long opportunity with an intimate Arizona-based nonprofit. It is also a chance to be a part of a global cause of human rights in migration.

- Tracking emerging narratives, policy updates, and significant events related to migration and mobility in Italy.
- Assessing the reliability and relevance of sources, with attention to accuracy, bias, and misinformation.
- Selecting and synthesizing key information into short, clear, and factual news items
- Writing concise summaries and briefings tailored to the MotM community, using accessible and inclusive language.
- Organizing and archiving collected information for internal reference and future use.
- Supporting the timely dissemination of news updates through MotM’s communication channels (email, social, etc.), as required.
- Assist with production of Instagram Live topics and guest selection.
Academic Credit
This internship is a 1-3 credit internship. 1 credit = 45 hours of work according to requirements of the University of Arizona Board of Regents. For a successful completion of a 1 credit internship you will have to work 2 to 3 hours a week throughout the semester. An “hour of work” in relation to an internship means 60 minutes of required training, required provision of services to the internship site, AND/OR independent work required to complete the course assignments that will be graded by the instructor of record.
You will work 14 weeks for MotM. In the last two weeks of your internship you will complete a final portfolio presentation that summarizes your learning. This will be the last component of your internship that you will be presenting as a final course presentation.
Academic component: In order to be enrolled in Internship credit, you will also be enrolled in an internship course. You will be provided with a project plan detailing: (1) learning outcomes, (2) expected reading, (3) expected meetings, (4) expected work products, (5) criteria to be used for evaluation and grading, and (6) academic policies.
