Meet Sofia, our COH Italian Student Ambassador!

Jan. 26, 2021

The Italian faculty is happy to announce that Sofia Soliman has been chosen as the College of Humanities Student Ambassador representing the Italian program, beginning in January 2021! As a COH Student Ambassador, Sofia will work with COH Recruitment Coordinator Karina Rodriguez on recruitment-based and college-related projects throughout the year.  Here is what Sofia has to say about her love of Italy and her new ambassadorship:

"Hi! My name is Sofia Soliman and I am a sophomore at the University of Arizona studying Italian Language and Literature and Pre-Psychological Science. I am honored to represent the Italian Department as an Ambassador for the College of Humanities. Being half Italian myself, I have always had a love and appreciation for the language, culture, and country. I began taking Italian language classes when I was ten years old and after traveling to Italy for the first time in 2012, my dream to become fluent in the language was cemented. I had the opportunity to go back to Italy in 2015, where I visited Tuscany and the historic cities of Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice, and Lucca. In 2016, I traveled to Northern Italy, specifically Bergamo and Sirmione. My three trips to Italy greatly influenced my passion for learning about and educating others on the Italian culture outside of the American perspective. I jumped at the opportunity to represent the Italian major because I believe that knowledge of culture and language is vital in connecting to people and the world. I am grateful to the College of Humanities Italian Department for the opportunity to spread appreciation for this beautiful country."

NAILED IT! CUCINIAMO INSIEME!

LET'S COOK TOGETHER!

When
3:30 p.m., Nov. 24, 2020

Nailed it!, the virtual cooking night was organized on November 20th 2020, for all students enrolled in Italian. Prior to the event students were asked to pick a recipe they wanted to cook off a list. On the day of the event students cooked in small groups with those who wanted to prepare the same dish, using Italian recipes. In the end, they shared their final dish for a “virtual taste”. Most of the students tried these dishes for the first time and were very satisfied and motivated to try cooking Italian dishes in the future as well, using these Italian recipes and others. The organizers, Borbi Gaspar and Giulia Negretto, were very impressed by the talented chefs. It was very hard for them to have only a “virtual taste” of the beautiful dishes that students prepared. They look forward to offering this event again in the future.
